Literally translated "to deceive the eye", a trompe l'oeil (pronounced "trump loy") is mural technique which relies on the ability of the artist to make viewers initially believe that they are looking at a three-dimensional scene. This effect is achieved largely by the proper use of shadowing. A good trompe l'oeil will fool the first-time viewer initially, but the goal is not to sustain that deception, for it is the instant that the viewer realizes he/she has been fooled that produces the most powerful & memorable effect. They will never forget the first time they observed that mural and the impression it made on them. |
